Newborn Care

Class Overview

This class is for anyone who wants to learn more about the basics of baby care for the first 8 weeks of life.

Take as as a stand alone class, in combination with Breastfeeding or complementary to the Labor and Birth mini-series.

Note: This class is included in the Great Starts Series. If you are taking a series that is 3 weeks or longer (or Expecting Multiples), you do not need to register separately for Newborn Care.

Class Topics

What newborn babies are like: appearance, senses, capabilities, temperament

What babies need, and how they communicate: reading infant cues; understanding crying; and techniques for soothing

Daily care: sleeping and sleep safety, bathing and diapering, feeding, and health

Logistics

Locations: This 2.5-hour class is part of all full birth series (including the 6- and 3-week Great Start series, HypoBirthing®, Lamaze®, Penny Simkin’s 8-wk series, and Expecting Multiples). It is offered at nearly all of our teaching locations, including our classrooms in the Rainier neighborhood of Seattle and in Mountlake Terrace, Northwest Hospital in North Seattle, UW Medicine’s Roosevelt clinic in the U-District, Kaiser Permanente’s Bellevue Medical Center, as well as Valley Medical Center in Renton.

Included already in all comprehensive Series classes).
